One of the most important things that you can teach your children is the correct technique for brushing teeth advises this Abbotsford dentist It’s something that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

Proper tooth brushing techniques is just one of the dental health subjects discussed at http://abbotsforddentist.com .
If you follow these simple steps, it will help you to avoid tooth decay, gum disease and the other dental conditions that come as a result of incorrect brushing techniques:
  1. Hold the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. Position the bristles to where your gums and teeth meet. Use a gentle massaging motion, in circles or very slightly back and forth, working on only one to two teeth at a time. Don’t scrub. If you brush too hard, it can result in the gums receding.
  2. Be sure to clean every exposed surface of the tooth, not just the side or the top chewing surface… be sure to brush on the inside of the teeth AND the outside or cheek side of the teeth as well.
  3. We’re all busy and it’s often a temptation to rush brushing.  Don’t rush – a thorough brushing should take about 2 or 3 minutes at least.
  4. It’s also a good idea to do things differently on a frequent basis.  Getting into a habit of brushing your teeth frequently is wonderful, but brushing them exactly the same way every single time means that if you’re missing any spots, you’ll miss the same spots every single time as well.  It’s a good idea to change the order in which you brush so that you maximize your chances of hitting every spot regularly.
  5. It’s important to choose a good toothbrush – and the right one for your specific situation. There are so many different toothbrushes available it can be confusing.  Ideally you’re looking for one with soft, rounded bristles and having a shape which fits comfortably into your mouth in all the areas you need to brush.
  6. It’s also a good idea to get a new toothbrush every 3 months.
  7. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, morning and evening – especially the evening as this is when bacteria can grow undisturbed for several hours while you’re sleeping.  It’s even better if you can brush every time after you eat or drink.
It’s very important to remove plaque with brushing and flossing within 48 hours otherwise it will harden and form a chemical bond with the tooth known as Tartar.
Tartar has to be removed by professional cleaning – you cannot brush or floss it away.  As this is a leading cause of gum disease, it’s important to not let it develop.
